 What is a Teaching School?

Teaching schools are outstanding schools with a record of high quality CPD and leadership development. They have been designate by the Department for Education to provide Initial Teacher Training, Continued Professional Development, leadership development, school to school support, and research into ways to improve education.   More widely, the aim of teaching schools is to support school improvement across their local areas.

Mercia Learning Alliance was formed by Ofsted Outstanding Teaching School King Ecgbert School in Sheffield. Teaching schools offer Initial Teacher Training; continual professional development courses, leadership and succession development, school to school support, and conduct research into initiatives for improving education.

We are now working closely with various primary and secondary partner schools across Sheffield to raise the standard of education and positive outcomes for children throughout the city, including training the next generation of outstanding teachers.

King Ecgbert is an outstanding 11-18 fully comprehensive school located on the Peak District border of Sheffield. We are very proud of our inclusive values, our socially and ethnically mixed intake and our powerful drive to enable all young people to reach their full potential through excellent teaching, high aspiration and nurturing pastoral support. We are proud to be working in association with the University of Sheffield as we have long standing experience of the quality of the professional learning the department offers for ITT.

Our students make excellent progress, far beyond national averages and this is due to the commitment and skill of our teaching and talented support staff, along with a genuine desire from the student body to work hard and achieve highly. We have a nationally renowned Integrated Resource for students with ASD, adding an extra dimension to the experience we can offer to your training.

Our school is in a learning partnership with Newfield, a rapidly improving 11-16 school at an exciting phase in its development and hence has lots to offer as a placement school to enhance your understanding of educational contexts and approaches. You will learn from a range of outstanding practitioners from within your chosen specialism and beyond.

We value our staff and work hard to offer CPD that supports all to develop the leadership skills that are necessary for a career in education, with bespoke programmes that equip colleagues for promoted posts right up to headship. You will experience our high quality CPD and share your experiences and practice with colleagues from the very start.

Our outstanding teachers and fantastic student body are waiting to meet you.
